The first chapter of the Matella journey began over a decade ago, when Mat started seeking natural skincare solutions for his skin. Having lived with dermatitis and later psoriasis since childhood, he had spent years relying on increasingly strong pharmaceutical creams. But instead of finding lasting relief, it felt like the dependency kept growing — and so did the frustration.

Tired of short-term fixes and harsh chemical ingredients, Mat turned to something older and more grounded: herbal remedies and plant-based skincare. He began exploring Ayurvedic treatments and the power of natural oils and botanicals. At first, it was curiosity. Then it became research. Soon after, it turned into hands-on experimentation.

What followed was eye-opening. Certain essential oils and organic botanicals started making a real difference — helping to soothe and support the skin in a more balanced, sustainable way. One of the first creations was a simple rose geranium body butter. Through trial and error, the formula was slowly refined until it became a staple in Mat’s daily routine.

What started as a personal remedy quietly evolved. Friends and family began trying out the body butter and other handmade natural skincare products, and the feedback blew us away. People connected not only with the products but with the idea behind them: something honest, rooted in nature, and made with care.

That response lit a fire in us. Mat and Elle — Matella — joined forces to create a space where others could access cruelty-free, eco-conscious, and handcrafted skincare without the noise and chemicals of mainstream products. No hype, no miracle claims — just thoughtful, earth-inspired creations.

As the journey grew, so did our horizons. Our love of travel opened up a second chapter — one that took us to Egypt and parts of the Far East, where we learned more about traditional plant-based remedies and sustainable ingredient sourcing. From local markets to small cooperatives, we were inspired by the deep respect many cultures hold for nature and its offerings. This helped shape not only what we create but how we create it.

Today, Matella continues to grow organically. We still craft our products in small batches using natural ingredients, we still believe in simplicity, and we still trust in nature’s ability to empower us — gently and consistently.

We’re proud of how far we’ve come — and even more excited for what’s ahead. This journey started with a problem. It turned into a purpose. And now, it’s a path we’re honoured to walk with others who believe in natural, effective, and ethical skincare.
